Data & Methodology

THE DATA IS REAL.

OFFICIAL DATA

Unfortunately, so are the recalls. This page explains exactly where every piece of information on Ford Recall Tracker comes from and how each statistic is calculated.

Recall Data

Recall information is sourced primarily from publicly available records maintained by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), retrieved via the public NHTSA recalls API.

Where the source record provides it, Ford Recall Tracker retains:

  • NHTSA campaign number
  • Manufacturer
  • Report received date
  • Affected population (potentially affected units)
  • Component
  • Summary
  • Consequence
  • Remedy
  • Model
  • Model year
  • Source record (link to the official NHTSA campaign page)
  • Synchronization date (when the record was last fetched)

These fields are presented as OFFICIAL DATA and are intended to reproduce the underlying government record. They are not edited or rewritten.

Calculated Statistics

The following figures are calculations performed by Ford Recall Tracker from the source records. They are labeled CALCULATED FROM OFFICIAL DATA throughout the site.

  • Days Since Last Recall — calendar days between today and the most recent NHTSA report-received date in the dataset.
  • Recalls This Year — count of campaigns with a report-received date in the current calendar year.
  • Recalls This Month — count of campaigns with a report-received date in the current calendar month.
  • Average Days Between Recalls — mean interval (in days) between consecutive report-received dates within the current year.
  • Longest Recall-Free Streak — the greatest number of consecutive days in the current year with no new campaign reported.
  • Vehicles Potentially Affected — the sum of affected-population figures across campaigns where the source reported a population. See the important note below.
  • Recall Frequency — campaigns per unit of time (per month or per year), computed from report-received dates.
  • Most Frequently Appearing Models — ranking of models by the number of campaigns in which they appear, counted from the source record’s model field.

An Important Note on “Affected Vehicles”

Affected vehicle populations across multiple campaigns are not automatically described as “unique vehicles.” The same physical vehicle may appear in multiple recall campaigns.

We use language such as “vehicles potentially affected across campaigns.” Unless the data actually supports unique-vehicle counting — which the public NHTSA feed generally does not — we do not claim a count of distinct vehicles.

Synchronization

Recall records are periodically fetched from the NHTSA API by an administrator. Existing campaigns are updated; new ones are added. The NHTSA feed does not always report an affected population, in which case the field is shown as “Not reported by source feed” rather than estimated.

Data Accuracy Disclaimer

Ford Recall Tracker attempts to accurately reproduce and analyze publicly available recall information. Government databases, manufacturer submissions, publication dates, corrections, amendments, superseding campaigns, and other factors may affect the information displayed.

We do not warrant that the information on this website is complete, current, error-free, or applicable to a specific vehicle. This website is not a substitute for an official VIN-based recall search.

For information concerning your specific vehicle, consult NHTSA, Ford Motor Company, or an authorized dealer. See something wrong? Report it here.

Important Safety Information

Ford Recall Tracker is not an official recall notification service. A campaign appearing on this website does not establish that your individual vehicle is affected. Likewise, failure to find a campaign here does not establish that your vehicle has no outstanding recalls.

For information concerning your specific vehicle, check your VIN using the official NHTSA recall lookup and/or Ford’s official recall service before relying on anything on this site.
